Volunteer Opportunities at KIPP: Charlotte

Immediate Opportunities

  1. Painting in the Modular Building: Paint the Ubuntu quote in the five classrooms in the modular unit.  Paint inspirational quotes in the bathrooms of the modular building and on the gym walls.
  2. Create and Hang Quotes.  Type and print quotes.  Laminate them.  Tape them on the back of all bathroom doors.
  3. Stain Picnic Tables.  Several picnic tables have been built to create outside seating on campus.  These picnic tables must be stained before they can be put outside for use.
  4. Assembling Home Visit Folders: Each new student will have a home visit completed by the staff prior to their enrollment at KIPP: Charlotte.  Assistance is needed to make copies of forms and put them in each prospective student’s file.

Ongoing Opportunities

  1. Mentoring: Mentors meet with students on a regular basis and develop relationships with those students.
  2. Tutoring: Work with students on their current homework assignments and areas in which the students need extra support.
  3. Reading Buddies: Meet with students and help them with their current library book or materials from their reading and writing class.
  4. Breakfast and Lunch: Assisting with setting out, distributing and storing breakfast and lunch for students is possible.  Meals are catered by Canteen Vending Services.  These meals arrive fully cooked and must be set out to be distributed to students.  Students eat breakfast between 7:15am and 8:00 am, and lunch between 12:30 pm and 1:15 pm.
  5. Dismissal:  The dismissal procedure requires three individuals: one person outside monitoring the flow of traffic, one person calling student numbers as cars arrive, and one person to let the students know when their ride has arrived.
  6. Student Materials: Various student materials such as small books, reference materials, and manipulatives for small group instruction need to be created, copied, and laminated.  While teachers are working diligently to create these materials, assistance in producing the finished items would be helpful.
  7. Administrative Assistance:  There are several administrative projects such as mailings that would be a great help.  Also, general assistance in the office would be helpful at times when a member of the staff is absent or in a meeting.
  8. Donating Supplies: There is always a need for consumable supplies, including copy paper, loose leaf, pencils, erasers, paper towels, hand sanitizer, surface sanitizing wipes, and tissues.
  9. Cartridges for Kids Volunteer:  KIPP Charlotte runs an ongoing recycling drive.  We raise funds through recycling old cell phones, laptops, video games, ink cartridges…  We are looking for a dedicated volunteer to promote the ongoing drive, regularly collect and pack up all items collected and arrange the free shipping to Cartridges for Kids.

 Fundraising

  1. There are many opportunities to raise funds for the school, and in this respect we are in the early stages.  Individuals who are interested in organizing fundraisers, and generating ideas on how to best reach out to the community could come together and solidify opportunities that are in the best interest of the school.
