| Dear Reader, |
A note from Richard Barth, CEO of the KIPP Foundation:
"Don Fisher passed away Sunday morning at home in San Francisco, surrounded by his family. As many of you know, Don was Chair of the Board of the KIPP Foundation, but most importantly, co-founder -- along with Mike Feinberg, Dave Levin and Scott Hamilton - of the KIPP network. KIPP was one of the greatest loves of his absolutely extraordinary life, and all of us across the KIPP Team and Family have been blessed to have Don Fisher as our fiercest champion. Don knew that demography does not have to be destiny when it comes to a child's education, and he used his incredible mind, heart and generosity to show that powerful lesson to the country. Don helped prove what is possible in public education. The magnitude of his monetary support was matched by his deep personal engagement and his commitment to the cause of fighting educational inequity. Because of his efforts, hundreds of thousands of children have had doors of opportunity opened and their future will be his great legacy."

Reading Buddies Program
|
Research shows children assigned a mentor or reading buddy significantly improve significantly their reading abilities.
KIPP Charlotte is reaching out to the community for help. The KIPP Charlotte Reading Buddies Program is aimed at students who are reading below grade level.
Reading Buddies spend between 40 minutes to one hour per week with their little buddy, reading and talking about what they have read.
Please consider becoming a Reading Buddy and changing a child's life.
Contact Amanda Prothero for details.

Students enter TIP and CTY Programs
By Emily Kronemeyer
|
7th graders Brenton, Kahari, Khalil, Ishmi-el and Arianna, five outstanding members of the Pride of 2015 have qualified for the prestigious Talent Identification Program (TIP) sponsored by Duke University. To be eligible for this program, students must score in the 95th percentile or above on the End of Grade (EOG) test. By meeting this high bar, the students will receive ongoing news and support from the TIP office from now through their 10th grade year. They also qualify to take the SAT or ACT exam this winter to see if they then qualify to attend the elite Summer Studies Program: an intensive 3 week course held at Duke. All three students have chosen to take the SAT and have already begun preparing.
More great news, 6th graders Nautijye, Rufus and Leila will be entering John Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth (CTY) program. These students will all be preparing to take either the SAT (for 7th graders) or the SCAT (for 6th) this winter so if you have resources or want to volunteer your time to help them prepare, please contact:
Emily Kronemeyer at (980) 297-4714 or

Student Story
By Mr. Stich
|
Keyshawn - a member of the pride of 2015 - was trying to write his personal narrative, but was struggling with the allotted class time. He stayed after school for 3 days straight for extra help. Most of the time he was simply verbally telling me the story about how he broke his leg playing football last year during recess. I had to constantly tell him, "Stop telling me about it and write it down on paper."
By the third day, he was rolling. At one point, he stopped writing, looked up at me, was about to tell me something, but automatically recognized that I would tell him to write it down. So he wrote it down instead of telling me.
His story is one of the best I've read among the 7th graders so far.
