Dear Amanda,

Welcome to issue # 2 of the KIPP: Charlotte News. As we approach the holiday season we are grateful to all KIPP: Charlotte supporters. Please read on to find out more about the school and the students we serve.

Thanksgiving with the Pride!

On Friday, November 21, 2008 we will be celebrating Thanksgiving with the Pride. All the staff, students and their families will be coming together as a community to appreciate each other, give thanks and acknowledge the hard work everyone is putting in to pave the path to college for all of the young people we serve.

We are truly thankful to all our supporters and volunteers for everything they do for the school.

The Pride visits JCSU

On November 14, 2008 a group of 5th grade students from KIPP: Charlotte will visit Johnson C. Smith University. This college tour is one of many the students will take during their time at KIPP: Charlotte. These tours will enable students to make informed decisions on their choice of college and future aspirations

Help KIPP: Charlotte raise money by recycling ink cartridges, cell phones, DVD's, laptops and video games. Drop any of these items off at the school and we can raise funds for the school.

KIPP: Charlotte students give back to the community

KIPP: Charlotte is a school whose goal is not only to develop each student's individual academic abilities, but also has a social goal that adheres to the ideal of service to the fellow human being. At KIPP we teach our students to equate success with being an individual of outstanding character and a productive member of their community. Each student at KIPP commits to giving back to the community in a variety of ways.

In October, students carried out community service at The Brian Center, a retirement and nursing home for senior citizens. Students had a wonderful time creating marvelous arts and crafts and playing bingo with the residents. Students even turned the bingo game into a math lesson! The residents truly enjoyed spending time with KIPP: Charlotte students. We are INCREDIBLY proud of our students as they cherished the experience and learned a great deal about helping others.

This month we are visiting Samaritan House, a not-for-profit recuperative care facility for people who are homeless and in need of short term care following a hospital or emergency room stay. The students will be helping with household chores and gardening.

Kudos goes to Hands On Charlotte, Ms. Wall and Ms. Flowers who organize the community service activities for KIPP: Charlotte.
