KIPP: Charlotte News
Knowledge is Power Program
Dear Reader,
The summer is here and KIPP Charlotte students are taking a well earned vacation from school.

The past month has been one of tremendous insight.  Both 5th and 6th grade returned from their end of year trips to Washington DC and Atlanta exhausted but amazed by everything they had learned.

When we returned from our trips we discovered that KIPP Charlotte was successful in securing a $25,000 grant from The Deupree Family Foundation for a computer lab.  We are so grateful to The Deupree Family Foundation for supporting the Pride and believing in the mission and vision of KIPP Charlotte.

Regards

Student Stories
Mekhi and Mahogany joined KIPP Charlotte in 2008 as members of the pride of 2016.

In May 2009, after only one year at KIPP Charlotte, Mekhi grew 21 points on the end of grade reading test and Mahogany grew 19 points.  The State average for growth is 4 points.

We are so incredibly proud of Mahogany, Mekhi and their families for working so hard toward the joy of reading.

Well done Mahogany and Mekhi!  The world is your oyster.

The Pride of 2015 visit Atlanta
The KIPP Charlotte 6th graders, the Pride of 2015, recently went on a six day field trip to Atlanta.  During the trip they visited The King Center, the graveside of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, The Herndon Home, the Atlanta Aquarium, the CNN Center, Stone Mountain, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark University and we even enjoyed a Braves game.  One of the days the Pride of 2015 visited Birmingham, Alabama to enjoy the Civil Rights Institute, walk through Kelly Ingram Park, and tour the 16th St. Baptist Church.

The theme of the trip to Atlanta was "in order to make great change one will have to endure great struggle and sacrifice." There were many powerful moments on the Atlanta trip, but a moment which stood out happened during the visit to Stone Mountain, known for its geology, site seeing opportunities, history, and challenging hikes. We took the entire Pride right up the mountain to the very top. The hike was long, sometimes slippery, very hot, and challenging for some. We were in three major groups, high above the city of Atlanta, which you could see in the distance when you reached the top. As the Pride worked together to reach the top Digna and Shamarah held each other's hand and motivated one another by saying, "You can do it, Spelman is at the top and we are 'literally' climbing the mountain to college! If there is no struggle, there is no progress."

Watching the young women of KIPP Charlotte quote Fredrick Douglass as they conquered their (perceived) exhaustion, and witnessing the many young men over come their fear of heights and work together to accomplish the shared goal of 100% of the Pride reaching the top was truly amazing.

Spelman
Lunch and Breyon While the 6th grade were busy in Atlanta, the 5th graders
paid a visit to Washington DC.  While in DC the Pride visited George Washington University, the zoo, Arlington Cemetery, the Iwo Jima, Korean, Lincoln, Vietnam, WWII and Jefferson memorials, the Smithsonian museums, the Capitol, the Supreme Court and the National Archives.  Students also had their picture taken with Senator Kaye Hagan.

One of the most moving moments of the trip was when the Pride walked through the Vietnam memorial and several of the students wrote thoughtful notes to those who lost their lives for their country.  It was very clear that the students were impacted by the entire trip to Washington DC.

Several times each day on the trip, complete strangers would complement our group on their professionalism and polite demeanor.  We were incredibly proud to know that KIPP Charlotte 5th graders were representing the pride, their school and Charlotte so well.
