December 2011

Here at KIPP Charlotte, we have a tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving with the entire Team and Family. Each November, staff, students, and their families come together to enjoy a potluck lunch the Friday before Thanksgiving. On Friday, November 18, volunteers from the KIPP Family and the surrounding community served a delicious meal to about 700 students, family members, and staff members. We are so thankful for the opportunity to share the holiday season with KIPPsters and their families. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible! We hope that you all had an equally heart-warming Thanksgiving, and wish you the best in the holiday season and the new year.

Warm regards,
Tiffany Flowers-Washington
Co-Founder and School Leader

WELLS FARGO MOBILE MUSEUM
History on the Move

On Thursday, October 28, 2011 the Wells Fargo Mobile Museum paid a visit to KIPP Charlotte. History on the Move is a fun and interactive traveling museum that introduces Wells Fargo and their history to the community. The mobile museum features a life-size horse simulator, a Stagecoach Adventure video game, trivia games and engaging museum displays, along with other activities. Wells Fargo team members, including historians, attended the event and were available to answer students’ questions.

The KIPPsters had a wonderful time.  We are so grateful to Wells Fargo for their continued support of KIPP Charlotte!

SUPERSTAR OF THE MONTH

Each month, KIPP Charlotte teachers vote for the Superstar Student of the Month. This month, Destiny R. (Pride of 2017), was selected based on modeling the core values of KIPP Charlotte: Service, Excellence, Integrity, Passion, Courage, and Leadership. Destiny received a certificate and a gift card. Congratulations, Destiny!

FALL CONCERT
Autumn Leaves

KIPP Charlotte is full of talented students, and throughout the school year we offer several opportunities for KIPPsters to perform. The first performance of the school year was the Autumn Leaves show on November 17, which featured 5th grade chorus, 6th grade chorus, Honors Chorus, Drama club, Honors Spanish, and Spoken Word club. Ms. Cox (Chorus/Drama club), Ms. Fox (Spanish and French), and Mr. Knight-Justice (8th grade English/Spoken Word club) did a wonderful job helping students prepare, and the audience of students and families was blown away by the talent of the KIPPsters. We are looking forward to the next opportunity for students to take their place in the spotlight!

KIPP STUDENT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
KIPP Charlotte Represented at National Summit

The annual KIPP Student Leadership Summit provides 7th grade students from KIPP schools across the nation with the opportunity to come together and participate in leadership development and teamwork activities. 2011 marked the eighth annual KIPP Student Leadership Summit. This year 53 KIPP middle schools took part in the retreat, which was held at Woodland Christian Campground in Temple, GA. For the first time ever students were separated from their teachers for one day so everyone could benefit from leadership training. While the teachers were learning together the students conquered both the high and low ropes courses, facing their fears, building relationships, and problem solving as a team. On the second day at the campground, the teachers and students came back together to participate in a day of activities that provided the teachers a chance to coach and the students a chance to take turns leading their groups.

Kiara L. and Matthew H. were selected to represent KIPP Charlotte. Mr. Gates (Associate Director of KIPP through College and Athletic Program Director) accompanied the students on the retreat. “Kiara and Matthew represented KIPP Charlotte extremely well,” said Mr. Gates. We are proud of all of the KIPPsters who were selected to attend the summit.

CAREER DAY
KIPP Charlotte 3rd Annual Career Day

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011 KIPP Charlotte held its 3rd Annual Career Day for fifth and sixth grade students.  This hugely successful event helps to expand KIPPsters’ horizons about the various options available to college graduates. In order to make this event a success, we rely on the help of community volunteers. This year over 60 volunteers representing a broad range of careers spent time with the KIPPsters. We hosted volunteers representing the arts, business and finance, law, technology, human resources, education, hospitality, non-profit organizations, real estate, construction, public service, banking, medicine, and communications.
