High expectations.

Dear Reader,

It's crunch time.  We have just over 2 months to prepare KIPP Charlotte students for the End of Grade tests (EOG's).  The Pride has been working tirelessly to show the world what they are made of.  Please take a moment to consider becoming a reading buddy, a math tutor, a writing volunteer or a mentor and help close the achievement gap.

Take a moment to check out Melinda French Gates' Op Ed piece in The Washington Post, entitled "Education reform, one classroom at a time."

Sincerely,

KIPP Charlotte

Making Connections
Written by Ms. Bumgarner, Sixth grade science teacher.

Today as a I was walking through the hall, Darkinah (Pride of 2016) was walking with his mentor. We have been learning about the eye in science class. The kids had so many questions about how the eye can mess up and not work properly that we took a couple of days to look into some eye conditions that can lead to blindness or vision loss as well as their treatments.

One of the conditions we learned about was cataracts. Evidently Darkinah had a conversation about class with his mentor and grabbed me when he saw me to tell me that his mentor had cataract surgery recently. Darkinah was able to explain what cataracts were and the surgical process to remove and replace the lens in your eye.

It was so special to see Darkinah and his mentor connect and have a conversation about something he had learned in class.

We are team and family.

Dr. Ronald L. Carter Visits KIPP Charlotte
Written by Mr. Brown, seventh grade science teacher and JCSU Alum.

Dr. Ronald L. Carter, 13th President of Johnson C. Smith University, came to visit KIPP Charlotte and spoke to the Pride of 2015 about his "life journey."  Dr. Carter encouraged and inspired students to "stretch" themselves and at every cost take advantage of the opportunity given in and outside the classroom.

After Dr. Carter addressed 45 students out of the pride of 2015 they stated "it was a breath of fresh air".  Dr. Carter challenged the students to build a "dream team" that will push them beyond their limits.  A dream team should consist of mentors, teachers, coaches, family members, pastors, and friends that will in fact challenge and guide them and change their lives.

After Dr. Carter addressed the Pride of 2015, he observed Mr. Sparks' 6th grade math class and Ms. Oyola's 5th grade reading class.  Ms. Oyola's class just so happened to be the homeroom JCSU.  When the class realized who Dr. Carter was they were very proud.

Thank you Dr. Carter, for supporting The Pride!

Mock Interview Day - A Huge Success

Elijah

Mock Interview Day took place on Friday, February 19, 2010.  This event was specifically designed for the Pride of 2015 (7th grade) to practice their interviewing skills, as this will be a necessary skill not only for their high school applications in the fall, but in life.

Each student interviewed with two members of the KIPP Charlotte extended family - individuals from the community and business world that support KIPP Charlotte's mission but are not well known to the student. The chemistry between the students and our guest interviewers was amazing.

Interviewers were provided a general script of questions to ask that are similar to those used in private and boarding school interviews. Each interview lasted approximately 10 minutes and then the interviewer provided the student with constructive feedback. The student then had the opportunity to 'rewind' and do over a portion of the interview incorporating the new feedback they received.

Mock Interview Day was amazing to watch. The energy in the room was palpable. Each student came to school in business attire and ready to represent KIPP Charlotte in the best way possible.  Thirty-Eight community and business leaders volunteered their time and talents to make this day a success.  Thank you to all who worked so hard to make this day happen.

Director of High School Placement, Ms. Kronemeyer worked tirelessly to ensure Mock Interview Day inspired both the students and the volunteers.  We can safely say...your hard work paid off!

Build a better tomorrow.
