KIPP Charlotte News
Knowledge is Power Program

Dear Reader,
Thank you to all parents, donors and volunteers who made our recent event 'Thanksgiving with the Pride', a huge success.  Over 750 people gathered to give thanks and celebrate the hardest working community of students, parents, and teachers in all of Charlotte.

The event was filled with the sense of community, warmth and support.  Parents took the time to thank each teacher individually for the impact they have made on their children.  The students were proud to show off their school and celebrate with their fellow Pride members.  Teachers embraced the opportunity to bond with families and each other.  An all in all success!

The Charlotte Observer published a great article about KIPP Charlotte on December 11, 2009.  Click HERE to read the article.

KIPP Charlotte Career Day
by Emily Kronemeyer

Career Day On November 11th, 2009, KIPP Charlotte hosted its first annual Career Day. With the great help of board members Susan Tran, Alice Schulte, Shalanna Pirtle, and Lisa Frison we were able to bring 22 guests from various careers to speak with our 6th and 7th grade students. Our guests represented companies such as Bank of America, Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, WBTV, Charlotte Magazine, Cheddars, and TIAA-CREF. Among the public service realm we enjoyed learning from the City of Charlotte, YMCA, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Charlotte Fire Department, and the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County. These guests were stationed at booths and spoke with groups of 5-7 students during rotations and students were able to visit at least three booths. When asked what was one lesson they learned from speaking with our guests, here are what some of our students said:

"Every job you have is to help people get better with their lives." -Kris

"I learned that working hard and not letting anyone tell you you can't gets you the job."-Tahj

"I learned to always work hard at what you do."-Mariah

"One important lesson I learned is plan your business slowly while you invest your money wisely."-Montel

A special thank you to all of our guests! We look forward to seeing you around KIPP Charlotte again soon!

Math + Technology = Student Growth
by Faruq Asaad

WE KNOW JOHN VENN

The 31 students shown in the picture below are a fine example of what happens when dedicated educators and willing students come together to close the education gap.

7th Grade math teacher, Mr. Asaad, challenged the students to prepare a research paper on John Venn.  The quality of the work presented by the students here was so outstanding that they each earned a grade ranging from A+ to A-.

This was by no means a singular effort.  Some procrastinators waited until the last moment to work on their presentations and needed some assistance.  A great deal of thanks goes out to the Technology instructor, Ms. Leslie, who worked with several of the students until well after 7 p.m. at night to provide access to the internet, computers, and some guidance on writing style and formatting.

Mr Asaad states that if you challenge children, they will rise to the occasion.  Based on the performance of these students (1/3 of the 7th grade), these children seem ready to face the challenge and climb the mountain to college.  Congratulations to you all for your outstanding work.

KIPP Charlotte Spelling Bee
ToriannaOn Monday, November 16, KIPP Charlotte held its second annual spelling bee.  At lunchtime all the students and faculty gathered in the cafeteria to watch the contest.

22 students took part in the spelling bee and they all showed good sportsmanship by supporting each other throughout the competition.

amidst words such as condemn, fallacy, larynx and subterranean, three finalists made it to the end to battle it out.

A'keyio, a member of the Pride of 2015 came in 3rd place.  Kahari R, also a member of the Pride of 2015 came in 2nd place.

And the winner is...supreme KIPP Charlotte spelling champion, a member of the Pride of 2017, Torianna!

5th grader Torianna beat all of 5th, 6th and 7th grade at the school.  Torianna's winning word was financier.

Congratulations to Torianna!

The Pride of 2017 made their first college trip of the year to Johnson C. Smith University.

The admissions team at JCSU escorted the group around campus and taught the children about the history of JCSU, student life and several chants.

Throughout the tour, KIPP Charlotte students were engaged and enthusiastic.  They visited the student memorial, the library and gymnasium.  The Pride of 2017 also enjoyed their first ever college cafeteria lunch (pictured above).

The admissions team did an amazing job and we believe we have several aspiring JCSU scholars in our midst.
