KIPP: Charlotte News
Knowledge is Power Program
Dear Reader,
We had an amazing response last month to our call for volunteers.  We now have three new reading buddies for students who are developing readers.

The 5th grade students are truly working on becoming S.M.A.R.T (Scholarly, Motivated, Accountable, Respectful, and Think).  The majority of 5th graders are on their way to making 1.5 years worth of growth in reading.  Many of them will make 2+ years worth of growth by the end of the year.

The 6th grade students have collectively read 2200 books this academic year...making them strong and critical readers.

Once again, we urge you to consider volunteering with KIPP Charlotte and make a real difference in a student's life. EOG's are only 26 work days away!

Regards

 KIPP in the Wilderness
The 6th grade team and Mr. Burnam took 45 students who earned a $40 paycheck average consistently for 3 weeks, white water rafting and hiking for the weekend. Students went rafting in the French Broad River and hiking at the North Carolina Arboretum.

Students had an amazing time and it was a great opportunity for teachers to show the students that they appreciate the hard work and effort they put forth on a daily basis.

On more than one occasion, the students received warm compliments from people passing by. They were called "extraordinary, blessed, special, attentive" and the list goes on.

"It was kind of scary and confusing but it was so much fun.  I fell off in the whirlpool", Akease.

"It was exciting because we experienced all the different levels of water".  Tara.

Many thanks go to Mr. Collington for attending the trip and being a fantastic parent chaperon.

KIPP Charlotte Welcomes Ms. McKenzie
KIPP Charlotte is incredibly proud to welcome Ms. Syrena McKenzie to the team.  Ms. McKenzie will be teaching 7th grade science in the 2009/2010 school year.

Ms. McKenzie is a graduate of Yale University, class of 2002, majoring in Biology. Following graduation, Ms. McKenzie joined Teach for America in Oakland, CA. A dedicated teacher with 7 years of classroom experience, Ms. McKenzie joins us from KIPP Pride High in Gaston, NC where she has worked for 3 years.

In 2008, Ms. McKenzie's students from KIPP Pride High earned the 4th highest Biology scores in all of North Carolina. All but 1 of her 70 students earned a 3 or 4 on the Biology 1 end of Course exam in 2008.

KIPP Charlotte is excited to have her.

When asked "why did you choose to join KIPP Charlotte", Ms. McKenzie responded by saying " I am really honored to have the opportunity to start teaching science at KIPP Charlotte this coming September. The students I have met there have made me very excited about what is possible for middle school science. I look forward to working with everyone on staff, helping the school to fulfill its mission and supporting students as they grow to be the change they wish to see in the world".
